Dog Adoption: An Act of Love

Adopting a dog is a win-win situation to both the adopter and the adopted. When visiting the Shelter you will observe a variety of healthy dogs of different sizes, genders, breeds, and ages. In front of every cage, you will see a small sign with the characteristics of the dog and its given name.

By walking through the aisles of cages, you will learn about the nature of each dog and maybe you will be prone to deduct if it is aggressive, affectionate, intelligent, and even if the lone animal has been abused or not. In your face-to-face encounter in the shelter, you can even whisper, pet, or be ready to get licked by some loving dog.

The decision to adopt the new member of your family will come up out of an instantaneous exchange of glances. At this moment, the eager dog will let you know with its eyes that is ready to be your best friend.

Think about the way that your life would change when bringing in a canine member. With a dog you will never be alone again as you will count with an unconditional companion for the rest of the animal’s life. He will be always happy to be with you and will show you its love permanently.

If you want to live the experience, pay a visit to the Miami-Dade Animal Shelter and you will be dazzled to see a modern and functional building devoted to host and take care of the dogs readied for adoption. Once in the Shelter’s premises, a staff of specialized workers will help you to find the dog of your dreams.

Miami-Dade counts with one of the most modern animal services of the world. In its functional premises in 3599 NW 79 Avenue, Doral, FL 33122 operates the Pet Adoption and Protection Center. We invite you to visit the Center, considered a model of best practices in animal housing, where you’ll be able to meet the animals in a comfortable environment.

Shelter visit hours:

  • Monday – Friday 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
  • Saturday 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.
  • *Closed on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, New Year’s Day, and County holidays.

When you adopt you are saving a life and making a commitment to welcoming the animal as a permanent member of your household.

Although you can search online the database of pets for adoption, it’s a unique experience to personally visit the Animal Shelter to adopt. Adoptions are on a first-come, first-served basis.

On the day of adoption, you need to bring the following information:

  • A copy of your driver license or valid state picture ID
  • Proof of current address
  • A collar and leash for a dog or puppy
  • A signed spay or neuter agreement and a $50 refundable deposit may be required if the pet cannot be sterilized at the time of his or her adoption. The $50 deposit will be refunded upon proof of pet’s sterilization.

You must be 18 years of age or older to adopt a pet

Due to the challenges of COVID-19, Miami-Dade County Animal Services Department is also offering virtual meet-and-greets with adoptable pets. This makes adopting a pet easy and safe for those residents who are practicing social distancing at home.

The way virtual meet-and-greets with adoptable pets work is as follows:

  • Start your pet search and write down the name and ID number of the pet or pets you are interested in.
  • Once you’ve identified your pet, send an email to adoptmiamipets@miamidade.govwith the subject line “virtual adoption.” Include the name and ID number of the animal, any questions you may have and your contact information in the email
  • An Animal Services adoption counselor will contact you to answer any questions you have about that pet and set up a Skype video meet and greet call with the pet
  • Once you’re ready to adopt, Animal Services will email you an adoption contract to fill out and return. With all the paperwork done virtually, the only thing left to do is to come in and pick up your new pet
  • Schedule a pickup time with Animal Services to ensure your pet will be ready and that your time spent at the shelter will be minimal
